It may be helpful to think of a justice of the peace as a steam-valve for civil courts. For many judges, rather than slip quietly into retirement or a lucrative private sector job, they opt to become justices of the peace and continue their dedicated service.

Invariably, when most people think about justices of the peace, they think of the kindly old man waiting to marry couple eager for nuptial bliss. This can't be helped as this has been the stereotype reinforced by popular culture, especially in romantic comedies. Indeed, for more rural towns and municipalities, the justice of the peace is the central figure that brings people to together.
