Most couples hope and expect that they will only purchase one in a lifetime, but statistics show that most people will have more than one marriage, for a number of reasons. Regardless of the age or the situation of that couple, the purchase of a wedding ring set represents their hopes and dreams that their new family will thrive for eternity in joy and happiness.
There are many factors to consider when purchasing a wedding ring. Traditionally, wedding rings were made of gold due to its supposed life-prolonging properties. Unlike base metals, gold does not tarnish or rust, and is non-allergenic. Gold, along with silver and platinum, is still a very popular choice in choosing a wedding set, but there are other exciting options.
Tungsten is one of the newer metals used to make wedding bands. Used by the military for years, it has the highest melting point, lowest vapor pressure, and highest tensile strength of all metals in their pure form, which to a new couple symbolizes the strength of their union, able to withstand whatever heat or pressure the future may hold. With the social and economic pressures of our modern society, the symbolic applications of tungsten are very timely.
Due to its unique composition, tungsten has a permanently polished appearance and will not wear or scratch or deteriorate like other metals. Unlike gold or silver, tungsten will not wear thin with time. My great-grandmother had inherited a wedding ring from her mother that had worn so thin, she actually had to have the original ring set into a new band just to wear it. This is something that will never happen with tungsten. No matter how many generations the ring passes through, it will remain the same size, shape, and quality.
The price, when compared to the rising costs of gold an silver, also makes tungsten the perfect fit for couples just starting out, or for couples that just want something different from the norm. It's beautiful and will never scratch. When purchasing a tungsten ring, make sure that it is free of cobalt. Cobalt is common in some of the less expensive tungsten rings, and lessons that actual quality of the ring. It can also cause allergic reactions, which is not something I would want in the ring that is meant to represent the quality of a marriage!
