Find Out Why Your Teenager Is Overweight

The luck least persons on earth from time immemorial

, so they say, were Adam and Eve because they were created adults and never became teenagers. Everyone knows the teen-age years are normally the best of anyone's life, when he is too young to be an adult, and too old to be a child. Teenage years are the times of pranks and camaraderie, of discovery, of fun, when life-lasting friendships and bonds are formed most strongly.

Unfortunately, some teenagers do not enjoy such a carefree active life, though they very much desire to do so, for one reason: they are overweight. Shunned by their contemporaries, overweight teenagers get discouraged from participating in normal teenage life and consequently turn to other pursuits, most probably delinquency, food, escapism and other forms. Studies indicate overweight children in America comprise 15% to 30% of the total children population, with an increasing obesity rate of 40% among 12-17 years old teenageers beginning from the early 1960's and 98% for those aged 6-11 years.

And that is just one aspect. Obesity has grown tremendously in the past years for both sexes, in all races, all ages, and all smoking levels as well. The typical American is more frequently overweight, beginning from childhood. And the danger is that an overweight child is ten times more likely to become obese when adult.

What causes obesity? Several factors have been determined to cause obesity in American teen-agers and others. Following are three of the widely recognized major causes, effects of either culture or technological advancement. In short, products of the changing world.

Technology. The advent of computers and the accompanying games, Net-surfing and sit-down research have drawn many teenagers from active activities and sports, be it simply backyard basketball, sandlot baseball, and park football scrimmages. Aside from the obligatory school work, less and less American teenagers are into active sports activities.

Food. The praise given in media about fatty foods such as hamburgers and fries has altered teenager preference for them away from healthier foods. Fast foods like hamburgers and fries have heavy doses of salt, fat or sugar, all agents of obesity. Salt keep body fluids; sugar contains many calories; fat is stored in the body. High intake means the body will be prone to obesity later when growth has stopped.

Exercise, or lack of it. Today the definition of exercise is some demanding work out in the gym, not the more common activities. So the teenagers choose to ride, not walk; sit down in front of the computer, not play backyard basketball; ride escalators, not use the stairs. The American youth is becoming more sedentary, reducing activities that expend calories, while also ingesting food rich in salt, sugar and fats.

These obvious causes make American teenagers obese more than ever. And while the factors are results of modern times, it is not a valid reason to be obese. The teenager who wants to stay healthy just needs to set himself to minimize salty, sweet and fatty foods and maximize exercise.
