Find Happiness, Lose Weight

In the last article we put forward the idea that whilst losing weight will make you happier, it won't help you find happiness.

Why?

Because happiness doesn't come from external factors such as how you look; it comes from the inside.

You can be overweight and blissfully happy or thin and utterly miserable. It's all about the way you perceive yourself, the people around you and the world that you're in. It's about how you interpret things or the meaning you give to things.

The fact is, however, that happiness is an important factor in weight loss.

The Impact Of Mood On Our Problems

Have you ever noticed that when you are in a good mood, your problems don't seem so problematic? They don't seem quite such a big deal?

But when you're in a bad mood or feeling low, they dominate your life?

The exact same problems. Sound familiar?

Feeling low = MASSIVE ISSUES

Feeling high = minor challenges

And when are you most likely to give something a go?

When you've put it in the "too difficult" box? When it feels like too big a problem to solve? Or when it feels relatively easy to achieve?

A lot of my clients think that if they don't feel terrible about their weight, they won't find the motivation to lose weight. But the opposite is often true.

When you feel at a really low ebb and something seems impossible to achieve, the easiest thing to do is to give up. Sometimes before you've even started. And how many times have you done that in your life when it comes to losing weight, I wonder!?

The Impact Of Negative Self-Talk

Moreover if you keep telling yourself you're "fat" or "lazy" or that you've "never achieved anything" in your life all common scenarios - you believe it.

If you're a "fat" person, then you're likely to believe that you'll always be that way.

If you're "lazy", well then you're not going to exercise or make an effort, are you?

If you've "never achieved anything" in your life, then you're not going to start trying now.

The more you tell yourself something, the more likely it is to remain that way or become a reality, even if it's not true.

So, finding happiness is an important step on the road to weight loss and being kinder to yourself is an important step towards finding happiness.

The Key To Happiness

But the real key to all this is to recognise that your moods are just based on thoughts - what you are thinking at that moment in time. Equally negative self-talk is just thoughts - what you are thinking at that moment in time.

They are not facts. They are not true. They are just thoughts.

You think you're fat sometimes.

You think you're lazy sometimes

You think you've never achieved anything sometimes.

Pretty much always when you're feeling down or grumpy, I suspect. But what about when you're feeling positive or happy? I bet you think different thoughts then?

If you can accept that your life is comprised of thoughts and that thoughts change according to your mood, then you are well on the road to happiness and your ideal weight.
