Equipment Control Design Process
Designing familiar and easy to use controls is an important step in creating a piece of equipment
. With the capabilities of modern custom keypads, engineers have the flexibility to create control systems to make device operation simple for users.
Gathering Information
The first step in the design of custom keypads is to figure out what functions are needed. Much of this process will be dictated by the device itself. Obviously each function needs a control. If the user will need to enter numbers or text, then a 10-key or QWERTY keyboard will be needed. Designers must decide whether multiple functions should be tied to a key or whether each task should be separate.
However design considerations should not stop with simple functionality. Designers should consider who the target audience is. If the device is aimed at technically-oriented people, custom keypads might be designed to be efficient at the cost of aesthetics or intuitive use. Devices intended for users with low or unknown technical ability should have controls that are easier to figure out.
If improving an existing device, interview current users for ideas. They may mention control aspects the engineers never considered, such as whether or not the device can be operated easily by left-handed users.
Prototyping
Rather that assuming a design that looks good on paper will work in actual use, manufacturers should create a mockup. Often the first mockup is a non-functional version that is created to judge how an items looks, how straightforward it is to use, or to judge control placement. The final design can be tweaked before a functional prototype is created.
Designers should not underestimate the importance of intangibles such as the look and feel of a device. Equipment with custom keypads that feel clumsy will create an impression in a user's mind that it isn't effective. Although function should be more important than appearance, the fact is consumers judge equipment by looks before they even consider trying it out. A sleek efficient design will improve sales.
Usability Testing
After a basic design has been finalized with the initial mockups, a functional prototype allows manufacturers to test the device in operation. It is worth it to create an operating version of the device and allow users to test it. Their criticisms allow the manufacturer to make more adjustments to controls and functions before commitment to a large product run. It would be unfortunate to produce ten thousand units only to discover some small change in custom keypads is needed for optimum operation.
The best usability testing has users talk out their thoughts as they use the device. Depending on users to write down their likes and dislikes after the fact is less effective. Users often forget important experiences after even a few minutes, so it is better to have the user talk out feelings so analysts can note them immediately.
