Effective Facial Hyperhidrosis Solutions

Facial hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which there is excessive sweating in the facial area

, and usually, in the scalp and neck as well. People affected by this condition almost always have a towel along, to keep the sweat from dripping to the collars of their suits and blouses. For women, it makes the use of make-up impossible.

People affected by hyperhidrosis usually have someone in the family tree affected by the same condition. It can either be primary or secondary. In primary hyperhidrosis, it is caused by an overactive sympathetic system. This means that sweat glands, which is one of the parts of the body regulated by this system, are always working overtime, resulting to too much sweat. In secondary hyperhidrosis, sweating is caused by an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes.

When you have Facial hyperhidrosis, note that you don't really sweat 24/7. It is triggered by a lot of things, such as too much caffeine, and the more common social anxiety. Contrary to popular belief, hyperhidrosis happens not only to overweight people, although that is an aggravating factor. You see, your body sweats to regulate heat. Obesity makes it difficult for your body heat to be regulated because of the added insulation that fat deposits provide.

Before you try any form of treatment, except the over-the-counter antiperspirants, you need to see a doctor. The root cause should be diagnosed. You should find out whether your case is primary or secondary. Your doctor will run tests to rule out one or the other. With these tests, the severity of your facial hyperhidrosis would be determined, and the appropriate treatments can therefore be recommended.

One of the more popular options is prescription antiperspirants. Usually, these are aluminum chloride solutions in higher concentrations. Usually, they are applied once a week. The less potent ones can be applied more frequently. Note that these products might cause irritation - something that you have to be very careful with, since you are going to apply it in the facial area.

You can also take medications orally. If the sweating is triggered the most by social anxiety, then antidepressants might be recommended. For people who suffer from hyperhidrosis not only in the face but in multiple areas as well, anti-cholinergics might be prescribed, but you might experience side effects such as drowsiness.

The more expensive options are Botox injections and ETS (Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy). Botox injections disable the sweat glands. They are effective if the source of the sweat is a small area, say, somewhere in the forehead. Results aren't long lasting though - only up to 9 months at most. With ETS, you are bound to get long-term results except when the nerves regenerate quite quickly. It is recommended for people who have problems not only in the facial area, but in other spots as well.

You don't have to put up with your excessive facial sweating problem. A trip to the dermatologist or taking the first step by doing research online can save you from having zero social life.
