During Pregnancy Sleeping on Back is not Good for You or Your Baby

Now that you are pregnant your motherly instinct have probably kicked in

. You want to make sure that you are doing everything you can to keep your baby safe. One thing that requires a little consideration is how you sleep. During pregnancy sleeping on back is not a sleeping position that is healthy for you or your baby.

Why not? As your baby grows bigger their weight can cause discomfort and health issues that are not good for expectant mothers who sleep on their backs. If you sleep on your back you put the weight of the growing fetus directly on your spine. This can lead to backaches.

Sleeping on your back also puts pressure on the inferior vena cava. This is the large vein that carries blood to the lower part of your body. This restricts the flow of blood and nutrients to your placenta. It can also lead to leg cramping and swelling.

Doctors recommend that early on in your pregnancy you get in the habit of sleeping on your left side. This side sleeping position is much better for you than pregnancy sleeping on back. Sleeping on your side avoids circulation problems. It also keeps the weight of your baby off of your spine and vital organs.

Maternity sleep experts recommend that pregnant women use a maternity pillow to maintain the side sleeping position. A maternity pillow is a full body pillow that offers support for your growing tummy and keeps you in the correct sleeping position. They also are very comfortable. Pregnant women report getting a much better night's sleep using a maternity pillow.

During pregnancy sleeping on back is not good for yourself or you baby. Get a maternity pillow to not only maintain a healthy sleeping position but to ensure you are cool and comfortable. Now is the time that you need your sleep and a maternity pillow can help you get a good, and proper, night's sleep.
