David Cameron's "Green" Baby Gift – an Acre of the Amazon
Most parents are showered with presents of clothes and toys to celebrate the birth of their new baby
. But David Cameron's daughter Florence was given an environmentally friendly gift an acre of the Amazon rainforest sponsored in her name.
The gesture came from Labour MP Frank Field, who was appointed by David Cameron to lead an independent commission into poverty. He bought the patch of Amazon rainforest through the charity Cool Earth, which enables people to buy up plots of trees in the rainforest to protect them.
Baby Florence's gift is certainly a fitting one for the daughter of a family who gave their home an energy efficiency overhaul and whose dad promised the "greenest government ever."
It also comes at a time when deforestation in Brazil is showing a dramatic decline new figures (http://news.mongabay.com/2010/0810-brazil_amazon.html) show a fall of 49 percent between August 2009 and June 2010 compared to the same period a year earlier.
Buying presents for newborns can be tricky at the best of times, let alone for a prime minister and his wife who will already have all the baby grows and toys they need.
But Field made a clever choice with his gift as well as it having a positive environmental impact, as a virtual' gift with no packaging it has impeccable green credentials.
