The blame for this increasing inclination to eat later and later in the day usually falls on our time-strapped lifestyles

. Do the facts sustain the view that dieters find it more difficult to do well on a weight loss plan if they indulge in night time eating?

It seems that opinions on this subject differ widely and by much more than I had at first thought it would. The alternative standpoints are various and at one end range from not eating certain kinds of food after a certain time or not eating any food at all after the late afternoon. While those who hold the viewpoint at the other end of the spectrum say that choosing to consume food and drink at any time has few if any unfavourable effects on a diet at all so long as what you are eating is healthy and nutritious.

What is the origin of the thought that eating later causes weight gain? Empirical studies have found an answer to this issue and have shown that as it gets later or bodies are less able to cope with high insulin levels. What then occurs is that blood glucose levels remain high, which is the direct result of the ingestion of carbohydrates, because the body is now less efficient at removing it. If the body is not as effective at dealing with higher levels of blood sugar then the liver will change this surplus glucose into fat. The type of fat deposited like this is known as visceral fat and is deposited around the stomach area, which is specifically harmful to you as it raises the chances of getting diabetes and heart disease. This view therefore says that you should not eat within 2 hours prior to you go to sleep because you'll be burning fewer calories while you sleep and so will put excess blood sugar on as fat. Now turning to the other standpoint.

There have been studies that have shown results contrary to the idea that eating later in the day makes you put on weight and have shown that any link only happens because the majority of people eating at night are already heavier and may not be adhering to a weight loss diet, that is to say, they haven't simply swapped a meal to later on, they are having an additional one. Those who eat breakfast as part of a weight loss diet or not, produced the opposite outcome, they have been found to be less liable to be overweight. The justification for this is understood to be that when we eat after our nightly fast we are boosting our metabolic function up a notch and so burning a greater number of calories for longer.

After all these contradictory sources, how should we look at this problem? You've got to look at your weight loss results, if after looking at your weight loss progresst it isn't what you hoped for then move meals about. Altering your meal pattern can yield great results, if things aren't working for you with your current meal times just change them a bit. But be aware that we're all slightly different and if a certain sitaution helps one person it may need small alterations until it gets the desired result for someone else.
