Breast Implants After Pregnancy

Pregnancy and childbirth are miracles of life but the toll they take on a womans

body can also cause some unwanted changes-saggy and misshapen breasts being among them.

Breast implants are sought by many women after having children. Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can change the shape, size, and position of the breasts and interfere with how a woman feels about her body, image, and appearance. Breast implant surgery can help boost a womens self-image and make her feel like the sexy woman she truly is.

Some women undergoing breast implant surgery after having children may also need to incorporate a breast lift surgery with their implant surgery; the breasts naturally grow larger during pregnancy and breastfeeding, thus the breast tissue stretches and can lose elasticity. Still other women may need only the breast implants. Each case is unique and should be thoroughly discussed with the surgeon to achieve the desired results.

Whether to choose silicone or saline implants is also a personal decision for any woman getting implants and the fact that a woman already has children or plans to have more children should not affect that decision.

The most natural looking implants with the least invasive scarring are implants inserted through an incision at the armpit and positioned sub-muscularly between the pectoral muscle and the ribs. The transaxillary or armpit incision is more preferable than the periareolar incision at the nipple. A periareolar incision can cause changes in nipple sensation and may make it more difficult to breastfeed. However, the armpit incision does not interfere with nipple sensation and thus poses no difficulties for women who want to have more children and breastfeed.

A woman considering breast implants should not forego that decision based solely on the grounds that she wants to have children someday. Thousands of women have breast implants and go on later in life to have children and successfully breastfeed them. By that same token, women who have already had children and want more need not postpone their desire for breast implants. As long as a woman is not currently pregnant or actively breastfeeding and she is healthy, there is no reason why she should not pursue her dream of getting breast implants. If a woman has recently given birth and/or is still breastfeeding, her doctor will discuss with her how long she needs to wait after childbirth or after she stops breastfeeding before she can proceed with breast implant surgery.
