Beware The Weight Loss Industry This New Year
Well its that time of year again, the time when all the fat cats in the weight loss
industry start to rub their hands, knowing that there are millions of people out there who will have over indulged at Christmas and are now searching for the latest quick solution to their weight problem.
You only have to take a look around you to see the vast number and range of dieting and slimming products being offered. The internet is plastered with advertisements for the latest fad diets and in vogue slimming products such as acai berry. Radio and TV stations are advertising organised weight loss groups such as Weight Watchers and Slimming World and local papers are full of the latest offers from all your local gyms.
No wonder the industry fat cats are happy, these products are designed with one idea in mind, to raise as much cash as possible for the owners, whether they help people to lose weight or not is irrelevant. In fact they dont want the product to be successful because then you are less likely to buy their next product when it hits the market.
The unfortunate truth is that none of these products will help you to lose weight and keep it off in the long run. OK, if youre not convinced then let us look at each one in turn:
Weight loss supplements and fad diets are temporary measures and no matter what the people selling you them say, you cannot remain on either for very long without damaging your health in some way. So of course, once you stop this temporary measure and go back to what you did before, the weight returns. This is why many people get stuck in the yo-yo dieting cycle.
Structured weight loss programmes are also temporary measures. OK so I admit you can attend these for as long as you like without harming your health, but just ask yourself, would you like to attend one of these sessions every week for the rest of your life? Of course not and again once you stop you put the weight back on again.
Joining a gym is not a temporary measure or at least it shouldnt be but the sad fact is that most gyms have hundreds of people on their books who do not attend regularly and it is these people who keep the gym in business. Sure there is a hardcore of gym members who attend regularly but in each gym this is a small number compared to the amount of members who do not attend regularly. And of course those who do attend regularly are not generally looking to lose weight, they attend because they love physical exercise and want to keep their already fit body in shape.
If you want to lose weight this new year, I would suggest you stay clear of all the media hype around the latest slimming products and programmes. In most cases people can lose weight by making a few simple but effective lifestyle changes. Eating healthy meals and a little gentle exercise such as a regular brisk walk is a really effective way to get started.
