Baby Feet Casting

Having ababy feet castingcreates a lasting memory for years to come

. A cast of your baby's feet is so much more than just a footprint! It's a 3-D capture of that tiny foot, including the chubby little dimples and rolls that your baby has on his or her feet and ankles.

You can do it yourself or hire a professional. If you choose to do it yourself, there are many places to buy a casting kit. The casting kit you buy will normally include everything you need to create at least one 3 dimensional plaster keepsake.

The kit should come with an impression powder mix. You'll simply mix this according to the directions using it to make the mold. To make the mold, you simply put your baby's foot into the mixture and hold it there from 45 seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on your kit, so that the mixture has time to set around the foot. Once it has set, you gently remove your child's foot and pour the casting mix into the mold. In a few hours you'll peel away the mold and reveal a perfect 3-D impression of your baby's foot! Once it's had sufficient time to dry, you can finish it however you'd like. Many parents opt for the bronze finish, reminiscent of the bronze shoes that used to be so popular.

Before starting this project, you'll want to be sure that baby is in the right mood! An unhappy, wiggly baby won't be very easy to work with and you may end up wasting materials on the first try. It's a good idea to have a helper so that there is someone to amuse and play with the baby and another person to mix the molding powder and get everything ready. Be sure that no one is wearing their favorite or expensive clothing as it may be ruined. A concern of many is how to keep bubbles out of the cast so that when the mold is torn away the toes won't be full of bubbles. One way to ensure that there are no bubbles is to push the brush end of a small paintbrush into each toe and break up any bubbles before it hardens. Also mixing the plaster carefully will help ensure that you don't start off with a lot of bubbles already in the mixture.
