Autism Treatment – Causes Of Regression
Lets take a moment to discuss the topic of regression and in particular
, regression after the holidays. In my practice, Ive seen a few kids who are quite impacted by regression and of course this is very concerning for their families. When children who are progressing nicely with good eye contact, good language and improvements in socialization regress and you see increased sensory and self stimulatory behaviors, they lose eye contact and language, you wonder what is causing this.
The holidays present additional challenges in regards to regressive behavior in Autism. I always start off by asking about possible dietary infractions in regards to holiday regression. Holiday meals can very often contain gluten and dairy and if the child is not used to getting those in their diet, those infractions can cause regression. If there were no gluten or dairy infractions, the increased sugar and artificial ingredients in foods that are commonly eaten over the holidays can also be contributing to regression. It could be parties at friends houses or school parties, the holidays bring more chances for infractions which can lead to regression. Yeast overgrowth can also be a factor in children who are sensitive to yeast. Increased sugar can feed yeast and can lead to some of those behaviors we see, loss of eye contact, increased sensory issues and self stimulatory behaviors.
Any changes in routine and schedule during the holidays can also contribute to regression. School holidays, the increased activity and excitement and even holiday traveling can be very disruptive to the routine of a child with Autism, causing regressive behavior. Another cause for regression can be the transition back to school after being off for a couple of weeks for holiday vacation. Or, any changes in therapy schedules during the holidays can also contribute to regression. The holidays are filled with changes and can be very overwhelming for a child with Autism, any combination of these things can lead to regressive behavior. Determining the cause of your childs regressive behavior may necessitate a review of the time period to asses changes in diet, routine and environment.
