Accountability is the Key to Weight Loss
The first key to successful weight loss is accountability
. Understand that your calories come from what you eat, not from a lack of exercise, or from a metabolic slow down, but from food. Making excuses for your lack of progress with your weight loss goals doesn't get your any closer to your magic number.
Snacking: the Enemy of Weight Loss
Every once in a while, a weight loss patient allows me to observe them in their native environment. These patients were struggling with weight loss. Do you know why? Because they were always snacking. Have you ever found yourself doing this? Something is always in your mouth, at your desk, nibbling in front of the computer, the television, or at your work station?
Sometimes, these nice folks will try to convince me that their weight loss efforts were ineffective because of a lack of exercise. One patient tried to convince me they needed a Lap-Band, while another explained they weren't losing weight because they had a slow metabolism. If you're serious about weight loss, you need to put down the chocolate, chips, cookies, and nuts. It's as simple as that.
Don't Blame Lack of Exercise
I often hear from my patients, "I didn't have a chance to exercise this month."
Take a moment and consider this: In the 1960's when McDonald's first opened its doors, the hamburger they sold was 230 calories less than the burger you get today. For me to exercise enough to make up for those calories I would have to be in the gym for 2 hours and 30 minutes doing serious weights the entire time. That's just to burn off the calories for one hamburger. Rather than knocking yourself at the gym, wouldn't it be easier to consume less calories?
I am not against exercise. It's an important component of overall health and wellness. It is, however, a LONG TERM investment in yourself. It is something that will allow you to get the body you want. Exercise does not provide instant gratification. And be clear, you cannot exercise enough to make up for splurging on potato chips.
