Acai Berry - Good Product And Business?
Most health conscious people will have encountered the Acai Berry phenomenon during the last 18 months
. This previously unknown product in Westernised countries is found as berries at the top of palm trees in the Brazilian jungle. It has been a staple and nutritious food there for years, but the product has now become sought after around the world. This opportunity has been capitalised upon by various agencies, not least the Brazilian government, who found they had an unexpected windfall on their hands.So what is so special about this berry to create a world-wide interest? For a grape sized, deep purple berry it contains a remarkable number of health enhancing ingredients, such as anti-oxidants, vitamins (especially niacin B3), fatty acids, amino acids, iron, fibre, and the same number of calories as an egg. These health-enhancing elements last for a limited time (24-48 hours) so they must be freeze dried or converted immediately to juice form or powder.
There is no doubting the beneficial ingredients in this berry, but with a wide diversity of healthy ingredients comes an even longer list of health claims. To name but a few, there is toxin elimination, weight loss by boosting metabolism, help for diabetes and arthritis, improvement in sleep and depression, better healing from injuries, reduction of irritation to stomach and liver together with a general improvement in the digestive system, colonic cleansing, maintenance of youthful skin and eyesight, help with cardiovascular problems, and of course prevention of various diseases, including cancer, by its anti-oxidant properties. As far as I can ascertain, most of these health claims have not been medically proven with long term studies (there has not yet been time to carry them out!) but one can assume they are as health giving as any other researched products with the same ingredients such as the anti-oxidants.
There are two major problems for the potential buyer. The first is the selection of the type of product as some may well have been modified in some way and not contain all, or the full amount of, the beneficial ingredients. Careful research is necessary to gain the full effects of this 'super food'. The second problem, and the one that has tainted the acai berry name, is the marketing. This is done by a wide diversity of agencies, and the purchaser should be very wary. There have been lots of free trial offers which have resulted in large unexpected bills, principally because the vendor has failed to read the small (or in some cases extremely small) print. Again careful research into the marketing company is essential. There are pyramid MLM businesses marketing the product, many of which are suspect. For any MLM, and there are many good ones out there, careful study of the compensation plan is advised.
What the potential user of the acai berry does not probably realise is the beneficial economic effect in Brazil. It is creating thousands of jobs but also has its problems. The unprecedented demand has led to a shortage of some of the products, mainly due to the problems of shipping the large amounts needed for export, and the sheer volume required, which cannot be produced fast enough.
In conclusion, there is no doubt that this is a beneficial health product, although some of the claims could be a little economical with the truth. There is a need to ensure that the type of product is 100% pure. The marketing is more of a problem for the potential client, but shouldn't be if the vendor researches carefully and reads all the fine print.
