7 Foolproof Business Networking Tips

Here are some simple tips to follow for the person who is just about to enter into the networking fray.


1. Discover who it is you want to target with your product or new idea. If you are representing a product in the life science sector, do not attend an event aimed at the communications industry. Find an event which is sponsored by a hospital or university. This will help you reach your specific demographic.

2. Do not just pick the event which is closest to you or the one which is happening the soonest. Take the time to find the best event for you and your goal.

3. Once you have found the right event, set a reachable goal heading into the event. Whether it is to obtain the most business cards, find two perspective clients, or just get your name out there, go in with a goal and a plan to achieve the goal.

4. Look your best, but do not stand out due to your fashion tastes. If it is a formal event, have that suit ironed and pressed. Stay away from anything which could be considered casual. If you are debating in your head whether or not the outfit is too casual, chances are it is. Go with the suit and look your best. Say the event is more of a social situation and a bit more laid back. This may allow for you to go with a nice button shirt, but not the full suit. Take a minute to research the dress code and be sure to fit in. You do not want to be casual or overdressed depending on the situation.

5. One common challenge for a person new to networking, is spending your time chatting with a fellow worker who went with you or someone you already know well. Attending an event with a full room of strangers is intimidating for anyone and bringing a coworker is a great idea to ease your anxiety. However, do not become trapped into standing in the corner with your friend chatting to each other the whole time. If you are alone and run into a close personal friend, remember you are there on business. Briefly say hi and make plans to catch up on your own time. The goal of a networking event is to obtain new clients, not socialize with already existing associates.

6. Understand that a lot of people representing large companies are lower level executives. Do not expect a CEO to be there to scoop up your product on the spot. Know the company is probably sending someone more entry level to obtain information. Be friendly to them and try to find out information from them. Ask what it is they are there for. How big is their company.

7. Arriving on time is as bad as arriving late. Get there early and familiarize yourself with the surroundings and guest list. Find out where the restrooms are located, as if someone asks you, you can appear helpful. Study the name tags and try to notice a few of the faces picking up the name tags. This way you can go up to them later and say "Hi Mr. Smith" and not pear down at their name tag instantly.

There are many more tips, but for a person just about to attend their first networking event, these steps will surely help you achieve your goal.
