5 Ways to Add Avocados to Your Diet

Avocados are a fruit that grows in the warmer climates of the world

. But unlike most other fruits they are high in healthy fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These fats are essential to the overall health of your body and can prevent many serious diseases such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, eye diseases and many others.

Avocados contain important nutrients such as vitamins A, C, E, K, B complex, potassium, magnesium, iron, iodine, manganese, zinc, phosphorus and selenium. Avocados also contain the essential omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

Adding avocados to your diet can be very beneficial, as not only will you obtain essential nutrients from them, but they also help you to better absorb fat soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K. This is due to the healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which they contain. So how can you add avocados to your diet?

Salads

Avocados go well in green and vegetable salads. Simply slice or dice the avocados and toss with your vegetables.

Smoothies

Avocados are also very good in fruit smoothies. You can blend them with your favorite fruits such as pineapples, mangoes, oranges, bananas, pears, strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, and sunflower seeds, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts or any other kind of nuts.

You can blend with clean water, as well as your favorite nut or rice milk. You may also sweeten them with Agave nectar or stevia.

Wraps

Thinly slice your avocado and add in with your favorite wraps such as vegetable, rice and bean or any other wrap that you may enjoy.

Spreads

Whether you need a spread for your wraps or sandwiches, avocados are a great substitute for all the other processed spreads, and are just as tasty. Simply mash an avocado and mix together with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a dash of unrefined sea salt, and use as you would any other spread.

Straight From the Shell

Last but not least, you can enjoy the avocado straight from the shell as is. Simply cut the avocado in half length-wise and remove the pit. Sprinkle some unrefined sea salt unto the flesh and scoop it out in spoonfuls and enjoy!

Tips:

When buying your avocados, make sure that they are still firm and green so that they can ripen in your home. This way they will not get bruised from being over handled by customers.

When storing a prepared or a cut avocado make sure to store in an air tight container as they tend to turn brown or black due to oxidation. You can also place plastic wrap directly on the avocado to prevent the browning.
