5 Steps For Men To Help Women Feel Better About Menopause And Minimize Associated Depresssion By Danny Hammond
Those of you who have read other articles I have written about how couples need to work through menopause together, know that I can kind of just go on and on. I'm going to make this article shorter and to the point. I was thinking about what I would say if a man asked me "What are 5 things I can do to help get my wife through this.
Well, I think that is my subject today. So, following is my attempt to break down into 5 categories how men can help. I will have my wife edit this before I turn it out for publication.
So, here we go. The type 5 ways to help your wife deal with menopause are:
1. Stay calm yourself. Understand that she doesn't mean what she says when anger and insecurity are the symptoms popping up. You have to remember she is dealing with you emotionally at this moment. Speak softly. Don't try to hard to make your point. She is not really needing to understand for the moment whether she is right or wrong. Just don't escalate the situation with your opposing anger. Let most things go she says go. They will be gone soon anyway..
2. Encourage her that this is all a normal process. That many others are dealing with it too. Tell her that you and she will get through it together. As men, we actually don't have any idea how frustrating all of the symptoms of menopause can be. But, we can let our wives know that we understand that it must be awful.
3. Work with her to research the condition known as menopause. This is a process not a disease and there is a lot of new data coming out all of the time. Encourage her to get a full physical and consider getting references from other women about which doctors are most understanding, patient and knowledgeable about menopause and the different effects it has on different women.
4. Encourage her to get some physical exercise. Everyone's systems work better when the body's engines get wound up. Some moodiness can be minimized when you get your systems endorphins kicking in. This is the natural pain killer and mood enhancer that our body makes when we are working.
5. Don't let her emotions consume you. You will eventually wear out if you fret over it every minute. Help her balance her life, but balance yours too. Try to keep your spirit up and you will help keep hers up to.
As a doctor told us. This menopause thing is going to be a long and rough ride. It takes two to make it better.
