5 Keys To Easy Diets
It's easy to think you'll only lose weight through hard work
. But it's just the opposite of that. The more suffering you do during your diet, the less likely you are to either succeed, or to keep the weight off.
Let's look at why:
Lots of us eat more when we need to soothe ragged emotions. We have a tough day at work, and eat to help us feel better. Or have an argument with our lover, and want to eat. Or yearn for a lover (if you don't have one) ... and want to eat!
If you want to lose weight, one of the best things you can do is to make it emotionally easy. The less you're struggling, the less you want to stuff yourself with junk food.
Key 1: Choose a plan that lets you eat food you love. Do you hate fish? Then don't try to force yourself into eating that tuna. That's going to drive up your emotional response, leaving you wanting cookies after. (Never mind the emotional response ... you might want cookies just to cleanse that palette!). I love fruit, steak, and a little chocolate and I make sure I always get these things. That makes it easy for me to stick to my plan. If you custom-design a plan that includes food you really look forward to, it is much easier.
Key 2: Plan for off-times. If you know you really love a little wine, but it's not on your program, just plan it in. Maybe on Friday nights, you let yourself enjoy a glass of wine. Many diet "specialists" would argue vehemently against this. But here's the thing: if you tweak your program a little and actually enjoy it, you'll stick with it. If you leave it as is, you may hate it, and abandon it early. Which is better?
Key 3: Go for progress, not perfection. Many people agonize when they violate the rules of their plan. You'll hear them agonize: "I was allowed 8 almonds, and oh no, I ate 20! I'm so bad, I can't count on myself for anything." After beating themselves up, they need cookies to calm down, which are far worse! If you're an emotional eater, the last thing you need to do is to catastrophize your mistakes. Be glad that all you needed was 12 almonds to feel better!
Key 4: Trust the wisdom of your body. Most plans try to supercede your knowledge of your body. They try to fit you into a plan that might be too little food, or might miss nutrients you need. If your body doesn't get something it needs, it may take over. Just as you can't force yourself to hold your breath until you die (because your bodily impulse to breathe is stronger than almost anyone's will power to hold their breath), most people also can't force themselves to stay away from food and nutrients they need.
Key 5: Let yourself adjust slowly to your new program. Your body is accustomed to sugar, to wheat, to all kinds of things that might be keeping you fat. If you try to cut those off quickly, your body will likely scream. If you cut them out, but allow for occasional deviations, you've got a much better chance of succeeding.
