While patience may be important to the success of a business, determining through a timeline how long to be patient, the direction a business is heading, and whether it's time to cut losses and pack things in are also important. Not having a timeline to guide the flow and growth of a business and how it progresses can easily impact its success.
Business Plan.
Similar to a timeline, a business plan can be a key element in the success or failure of an online business. While a timeline can set the standard for where a business wants to be and when, a business plan can better arrange the events needed to get there. Without a business plan to guide an online business in its initial stages, the likelihood of failure can increase dramatically, and even initial successes can be lost in the confusion of which direction the business should head next.
Finances
While planning and patience may be key elements to an online business's success or failure, proper financing is also critical to whether a business can weather the initial stages of operation. Many online businesses might have the funds needed to get up and running but don't have the necessary reserves to weather a downturn in business or an extended growth stage in which clients or customers might be lacking. Unfortunately, many good businesses have been lost simply due to the inability to last long enough financially to build a supporting customer base.
