What your health insurance policy will not cover?

Health insurance products have become an essential component of our financial planning. In India, the advent of health insurance has proved to be a major boon for the masses, particularly for the middle-income group. Having a health insurance plan can make it much easier for you to deal with medical emergencies, critical illnesses, and even surgeries.
The present market is brimming with different insurance companies and each one of them is offering a wide range of benefits. However, there are still a lot of things that your health insurance policy might not cover. So when you buy a health insurance policy, you must ask your agent about the list of exclusions. To help you know more, let us take a quick look at some of the aspects that are usually not covered even by the best health insurance companies in India.

Cosmetic Surgery:
Most of the health insurance policies will not cover expenses related to cosmetic surgeries. If the purpose behind the surgery is to enhance your appearance, it will not be covered. The insurer might cover it only if the surgery is counted as a part of Medically Necessary Treatment, and the same has to be obtained in writing from the medical practitioner. In the case of burns and accidents, the cost of cosmetic surgery would be covered. Likewise, any treatment and expenses related to baldness, alopecia, wigs, etc. will not be covered by your health insurance policy.
Pre-existing diseases:
This particular exclusion varies from one health insurance agency to the other. Even if your policy agrees to cover the treatment of your pre-existing disease, you will have to wait for a certain number of months or years. A waiting period of 24 to 48 months is followed by most of the insurance companies which is counted from the day you purchase the policy (without any gap in between). For example, if you are suffering from Osteoporosis, any kind of treatment related to it will be covered only after 24 months from the policy commencement date. Going through the list of pre-existing diseases will provide you with more idea in this regard. Some of them are Sinusitis, Tonsillitis, Cysts, Polycystic Ovarian diseases, Gout, Non-infective arthritis, Cholelithiasis, Cataract, and Glaucoma.
Permanent exclusions:
There are certain conditions which would get covered even after the waiting period of your policy is over. Some of them are-
Complications arising from the use of birth control pills

Alternative treatment methods, such as homeopathic treatment

Dangerous acts, which includes sports as well

Dental treatment

These are some of the aspects that might not get covered by your health insurance policy. Most of the policies also do not cover diagnostic tests and drugs. Before you buy health insurance policy, make sure you carefully go through the policy documents. You should also ask the insurance agent about these details.
