In 2010, 241,100 people got married in the UK. With the recession in full swing, the wedding industry seems to have coped rather well! From the couture wedding dress to a homemade centrepiece, beautiful and unforgettable weddings can be created on almost any budget.
The dress
Many glossy bridal magazines show the top end designer gowns, often influenced by celebrity marriages, but they also usually feature more thrifty options that still convey the same sophistication and sense of couture. Wedding dress designers are certainly able to work with a budget, and many high street shops and department stores are getting in on the acteven Tesco has started selling bridesmaids dresses!
Sample sales are also becoming increasingly popular, selling once or never worn gowns and accessories at fractional prices. (A good designer can alter a dress to appear to be "made for you".) The idea of a 'vintage' dress made from a preloved gown is also on the risescout charity shops and markets for cheap dresses with beautiful detailing. Again, a skilled seamstress can do the alterations.
If you're willing to pay more, naturally a unique couture wedding dress from a bridal boutique can bring your dream to life. However, most designers are very busy, so making an appointment is well advised. Celebrities and well known designers such as Vera Wang and Oscar De La Renta tend to lead the way in the wedding world, and features from a couture wedding dress on a celebrity often appears in the mainstream. So if a particular characteristic takes your fancy, don't think you have to blow your budget.
The cake
The cake is always a massive factor of any wedding, but instead of spending ludicrous amounts of money on a showstopper, you could go for a much simpler and more sophisticated idea: buy a ready iced, plain wedding cake from a supermarket and decorate it with flowers that match your colour scheme. However, for those with larger budgets, beautifully detailed and high quality cakes can be commissioned.
The wedding favours
Wedding favours can leave an unnecessarily large dent in the wallet, but they needn't be massively expensive. Instead of giving each guest a costly (but often useless) gift, why not give them a lottery ticket or a charity badge? Fun tokens of thanks are often the most memorable.
With organisation being at the heart of any smooth-running event, the right amount of planning and research can help you find an affordable dress, a perfect cake and unforgettable favours on even the strictest budget.
