Contemporary wedding Videography has come a long way since its introduction to many couples-to-be three decades ago
. The relatively high costs of wedding film-making in the 80s, no doubt due to the expensive and unwieldy equipment used then, did not make it as essential to the wedding ceremony as it is today. For starters, the medium was analog where the film was difficult to process, and did not maintain whatever semblance of quality it had for long, even under the strictest storage conditions. At that time, it was the very nature of the technology that kept it from becoming as widespread.
The field was also perceived as somewhat of an obstacle to the event it was developed for; as an example, the cameras required bulky and overly bright lighting systems, only to result in low-quality video that did little to capture the atmosphere of the festivities.
The late 80s to early 90s saw contemporary wedding videography catch on, with consumer video cameras and editing equipment that brought filmmakers closer to producing broadcast-quality video. In addition to the increasingly available lower-priced technology, videographers also organized themselves to create a more conducive industry.
WEVA, or the Wedding and Event Video Association, is one of the biggest and most active organizations of wedding filmmakers in the country. At this period, electronics manufacturers rode the wave and helped bridge the gap between entry-level and pure professional camera technology with the prosumer niche of products for a bigger share of the market.
The term prosumer, a combination of the words professional and consumer, also helped bring about the trend in decent-to-high quality video cameras with the novice filmmaker in mind. The trend, which occurred some time in the mid-90s, served to virtually eliminate the final technological and cost barriers that hampered the evolution of wedding videography since its beginning several decades before.
The devices produced at this time were compact, highly portable, and produced images that were of better quality than some of the expensive analog pro-cameras they were on shelf with. These cameras were able to produce decent videos at a much lower price tag and time frame, as well as help videographers to avoid intruding on the events they wished to document. Some of the cameras from the initial prosumer lines were also used by professional and commercial wedding videography businesses because of image quality and camera size.
Today, computer-based non-linear editing and digital camera technology has served to make these services available to people with a wide range of requirements. Digital recording, editing, and delivery have made the choice of wedding videography services easier and more affordable to those on a budget, without sacrificing quality.
