Why diets don't work and what does
A 2003 survey by Datamonitor estimated that only 1% of dieters succeeded in both losing weight and keeping it off.
If you're reading this article chances are that the title attracted you because you're one of the 99% of people who have tried dieting and failed. Chances are too that, because of your failure to lose weight or to stop weight returning, you feel a failure.
It's important that you understand that the whole concept of dieting is set up to make you fail. It's the norm because dieting in terms of calorie counting/food restriction is not sustainable and is not normal. So, if you've failed then CONGRATULATIONS you're normal.
The reasons for becoming overweight or obese are complex. However the effect of all those reasons is the same: our relationship with food is dramatically changed.
A normal relationship with food is that we eat it as fuel for energy and nutrients from which we maintain and run our physical body. Ideally, the signals from our body to our brain would tell us what to eat, when to eat and how much to eat. And, when we have satisfied our body's need, we stop eating. It's a beautiful biological process and most animals are perfect examples of how it works.
However, when our relationship with food goes out of kilter we see food obsessions, food used to provide comfort, food as a substitute for love, food used to anaesthetise our feelings or food addictions. And diets don't address any of these issues.
What you need is a way to get your relationship with food back into balance.
A long time ago my relationship with food was knocked way off balance. I can't even remember how it all started but the effect for me was to strictly control my food: what I ate and when I ate it. As a result of this weird relationship I trained as a fitness coach and learnt all about nutrition.
My relationship with food is now okay. But over the years I've learnt that:
There's no quick fix
Good nutrition helps you reset your mind's perception of food
There are many techniques to help you manage your way back into a healthy relationship with food.
Everything I've learnt is now available in Diets Don't Work. It's a step by step weekly plan that shows you how to make easy changes, explore your relationship with food and get it back into balance. As a result your weight will harmonise and you'll never have to think of dieting again.
Diets Don't Work is available as a PDF from The Little Shop of Charms and, if you prefer a Kindle version you'll find a link for it on the same page.
