Why Should I Have A Wedding Budget?
Budgeting can be important as a life skill
Budgeting can be important as a life skill. It's always good to have an idea of what you can afford to spend. The ability to make and keep a budget can help you greatly in achieving financial stability and peace of mind.
Budgeting can be especially important when dealing with potentially large expense such as weddings. The amount that Washington couples spend on their wedding varies greatly. Some couples spend only a couple thousand dollars. Others (even ones who aren't millionaires) spend well over twenty times that much.
Whether you live in Seattle or Spokane, in Olympia or Yakima, if you go into your wedding without some sort of financial plan, you run a couple of major risks. One is that you could end up spending more than you can afford. When looking at venues, flowers, decorations, honeymoon destinations, catering, and all of the many expenses involved in a wedding, it's easy to get starry-eyed.
You need to remember, though, that in the search for a dream wedding it's easy to get carried away and forget the real-life consequences of your spending (such as not being able to pay your rent). Another risk is that you could run out of money halfway through, leaving you with half of an expensive, lavish wedding, but no way to pay for the second half.
Finally, financial worries regarding one's wedding can easily take your special day and make it into one that is stressful and unhappy for all parties involved, and excessive spending may put strain on the new couple's relationship as well.
Many of these problems can be avoided if successful, smart budgeting is practiced. Budgeting doesn't have to take the fun out of your wedding. Rather, knowing how much you can afford to spend can help you to direct those funds to the elements of your wedding that mean most to you.
As a start to your wedding budget, you might want to start out by making a list of everything that you need to pay for. Make your list as exact as possible. Take a little time to make your list, and feel free to show it to friends and family to see if they can think of anything that you've missed. It's amazing how easy it is to overlook even major things when planning a large and complicated event like a wedding. Even if you feel like you've gotten everything, leave some extra money in an "Other" category, just to be safe.
