Why Prince William must marry a Protestant?
Why Prince William must marry a Protestant?
Just read somewhere that Prince William would not have been allowed to marry a non protestant, or rather will not be eligible to be King if he married a non-protestant. This got me thinking and so I decided to delve into it further.
According to the Act of Settlement, which is an Act of the Parliament of England filed in 1700 and passed in 1701, a member of the British Royal Family who marries a Catholic or becomes one loses his or her right to the throne. (Source: Wikipedia) The children or off springs of such a marriage provided they have been brought up as Protestants still retain their rights to the throne.
The only known exception to this rule is the Duke of Kent, because he and the Duchess were both Protestants when they married; she converted to the Catholic Church post-marriage.
The obvious question that comes to mind is why such an Act still exists in the 21st century and has not been reviewed, amended or brought in line to align with modern times. How different is such an act from the several ethnic minority groups in our society who encourage, persuade in some cases coerce their people to marry from within their communities and or to marry only individuals that belong to the same religious denomination or be ostracised.
Why an act of legislation should simply still exist to force or coerce Prince William into marrying a protestant or else he will lose his eligibility to the throne is mind boggling. So if our Royal Prince or any other member of the royal family fell in love with a catholic and wanted to marry her he will pay the price by forfeiting his eligibility to the throne.
Perhaps there is some history behind the passing of this act, which may have justified it at the time however in today's cosmopolitan, diverse society, especially as we encourage integration of different culture, different religion etc., then this act needs to be reviewed and amended accordingly.
We now live in society where a Muslim who falls in love with a Christian is encouraged to marry him or her, which ultimately will assist in further perpetuating religious tolerance and harmony in our society especially as we watch events due to religious intolerance unfold in the Middle East, Palestine, Somalia and other parts of Africa etc.
Who is better placed to set an example for all of us than our beloved royal family. Prince William has obviously made a fantastic choice and luckily she is also a protestant or else he would have had to a pay hefty price for loving and marrying a non-protestant.
