Why More And More Men Are Paying For Liposuction And Other Cosmetic Surgeries

Society has always placed pressure on women to maintain a certain appearance and attractiveness

. Many times those pressures are a result of male influences and other dominant societal influences. But often they are maintained by women competing with women for male attention. In recent years men have been competing among themselves for attractiveness and liposuction or other cosmetic surgeries is part of their actions to look their best.

Specialists believe this increase is the result of a new trend of role models in popular culture. These male role models are often depicted as young, lean, and energetic in the work place and in the media. The men depicted in the media are actors and they usually live a lifestyle of excessive exercise and cosmetic enhancements to make sure they fit the ever-competitive part of the perfect man.

Our society is no longer made of the hard working generations of men who gained physical health and attractiveness from a healthy home cooked diet and active employment. Most men today sit in offices all day and all week, drive cars to and from work, eat junk food, and are over-stressed with business issues. The reality is much different then portrayed in the media and movies. Therefore, men are seeking liposuction and other enhancements just to keep up with what appears to be real.

The procedure is different for men and women. The suction procedures are more intense for men in order to get the desired results because the male physique carries a higher percentage of fibrous materials in their fatty areas. Men tend to want to look etched with the illusion of more muscle while women desire a sculpting and smoothing effect. These wants typically raise the cost of liposuction for male patients as opposed to female patients. However, the elasticity of male skin is better able to hold the procedures in place than female skin.

Nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and liposuction were the highest percentages of surgical procedures performed on men in 2008. According to the ASPS, 30 percent of men suffer from an abnormal condition of enlarged breasts, and most men suffer hair loss at an early age. However, among the top five male cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2008 breast reductions and hair transplants made up the smallest percentage.

Women continue to create about 89 percent of the liposuction market. For this reason many surgeons understand the female body better than the male body. Some plastic surgeons in New York are devoting a large portion of their practices to male cosmetic surgeries in order to serve the rising interest. Careful research before choosing a doctor is encouraged.
