Why Avatar Is Worth Buying On 3d Blu-ray
In recent years it seems that 3D viewing is beginning to make a come back
, with the nauseating red and green glasses left in the past. Its predecessor (polarised glasses) provides a much more effective and much less tacky three dimensional experience. Probably the biggest Hollywood blockbuster that has implemented these new 3D effects to great success is Avatar, making a staggering 77 million dollars on its opening weekend alone.
For anyone who has seen the film, you will be all too aware that the plot doesnt hold much authenticity; in fact it is incredibly similar to that of Pocahontas, FernGully, or Dances with Wolves. The formula is straightforward and predictable, mirroring the destruction of the Native Americans. The storyline is such a clich that it almost seems as though the writers made a joke about it, making all of the bad characters ridiculously over the top and one dimensional, and naming the precious metal that they seek Unobtainuim.
However, it is not the story line that created such a buzz around this film. The visual displays that are presented are far more exciting than the progression of the plot. Subtle 3D effects successfully enhance the brightly coloured and vibrant world created by James Cameron. It is probably fair to say that Cameron redefined how 3D technology could be used, leaving behind those cheap and tacky comin at ya gags, and instead focusing on the potential the technology could add to the immersive depth of the image.
The fantasy world and characters that Cameron presents are uncanny, even the CGI used for the Navi Avatars achieves great photorealism, and their interactions with actors are all believable. Pandora is truly stunning and, though much of it is derivative of many fantasy novels and computer games, Cameron still presents it in a unique way. From the luminescent foliage to the tiniest of alien details, it is clear that a lot of thought and careful planning has been put into the film.
Following the rebirth of 3D visuals, we are now seeing 3D TVs becoming available to the public, so that this amazing visual display can be seen from the comfort of your own home. Despite the film coming out on DVD, few people were interested, the cinematic experience was what made the film, so much so that many people went to see the film more than once while the theatrical window was open. However, with 3D technology reaching peoples homes this is no longer the case, and for the 3D Blu-ray collector, Avatar should certainly be the top of the list.
