They were very expensive back then, but developments in manufacturing technologies over the decades have made them significantly more affordable. Still, it is a major purchase, and it pays to do your homework first. So, we'd like to offer you a few tips to keep in mind when it comes time for you to make such a purchase. By following a few simple principles, you won't be taken advantage of.
Before we get into the specific tips themselves, though, we'd like to take a closer look at what exactly one of these lifts is. What we're talking about is a mechanical device consisting primarily of a chair and a track. The track is affixed to a staircase, and the chair is affixed to the track. Of course, there is also a such thing as a wheelchair platform lift, which isn't affixed to a staircase, but rather lifts the surface of its platform to the point of being parallel with a higher floor of a building. These latter types of lifts have been employed both indoors and outdoors.
A little common sense goes a long way when making any major purchase, and these lifts are no exception. You should get as much information about the company that manufactured the lift you're considering as you can. Pay particular attention to the warranty information. It's also a good idea, as always, to read several unbiased reviews written by people who have bought the same lift you're considering. Needless to say, more than a few negative reviews should be a red flag. Most of these companies that sell these lifts are reputable, but there are a few outfits doing business which sell inferior lifts at inflated prices.
When you finally do purchase your wheelchair lift, you're going to find that there are several benefits associated with owning (and using) one. Even if you aren't completely incapable of walking up and down a flight of stairs, but it's difficult for you, owning one of these is still a good idea. This is particularly true if you have a disease which makes you prone to falling. If you use a wheelchair, but can maneuver yourself from it to the chair on the lift, then one chair on each floor of a two story home can enable you to get around just fine, even when no one else is there.
