What You Can Eat On A Clear Liquid Diet

If your doctor has placed you on a clear liquid diet

, you may be wondering if you are literally limited to water. Fortunately the answer is no. A clear liquid diet actually refers to liquids which you can see through. This does not actually mean colorless. For example, lemonade has a color, but you can see through it and thus it is okay for such a diet.

Acceptable things for such a diet are apple, cranberry and grape juices, lemonade and limeade (as long as all pulp is strained out, ) tea, honey, gelatin, ices, popsicles and broth (be sure there are no noodles or other solid pieces of any kind.) You may also suck on hard candies and drink water. Milk, citrus and all solid foods are NOT included as acceptable foods.

Patients may be placed on this type of diet to treat vomiting or diarrhea. They may also need to be on the diet as part of preparation for medical tests, such as blood work, and surgical procedures. This is a temporary diet that should only be used for medical reasons as directed by your doctor.

For diarrhea, you should drink as much of your clear liquids as possible. It is a good idea to include some salted types, like bullion. Diarrhea leads to dehydration and the more liquids you take in, the better you fight that from happening. Drink as much as you can; 3-4 quarts is not too much to consume.

For vomiting, you will actually want to start by taking in little amounts at a time. Even clear liquids can be thrown back up, so take it easy to start. Wait until an hour has passed since you last vomited. Then try 1 teaspoon of liquid. If that stays down, try another teaspoonful in 3 minutes. After 15 minutes of this cycle, if your intake is staying down, you may add a little more each time you consume something.

As mentioned, this is not a diet for any long periods of time. Resume regular eating by gradually adding a few starches. If all is well after 24 hours, you can eat normally. Try to avoid spicy foods, oils and dairy for the first week to help your body get back in the swing of things.
