What To Consider When Buying A Three-hole Punch

A three-hole punch is one of those must-have items that every office and classroom needs

. Since there's so many to choose from, selecting the right one can be challenging, especially if you're not exactly sure what you want. So, to help you out, here is a short list of everything you need to consider when buying one of these devices.

1.) What kind of punching capacity do you want? The first thing to consider is how many sheets of paper you want to punch at a time. Most of the desktop devices can only process a few sheets at once, which is fine if you're just going to be using it occasionally. However, if you will regularly need to work with a large volume of paper, you'll need a high-capacity product that will allow to to work with as many sheets as possible in one go.

2.) Do you prefer a manual or electric device? The second thing you should think about is whether you want a punch that's manual or electric. Manual ones tend to cost much less than their electric counterparts, but they also often have smaller punching capacities. On the other hand, electric machines will always need a power source (which isn't always available), but they do tend to work much faster than manual punches. They're also usually much more durable. You'll need to balance your needs with what your budget will allow.

3.) What's it made out of? Obviously, punches that are well-made will contain metal parts so they'll be able to stand up to years of use. They'll also have heavy-duty punching heads that can be replaced if necessary. A punch with plastic parts won't last very long, especially if you use it a lot.

4.) Do you need adjustable punching heads? How about replaceable ones? If you're just planning on working with traditional letter-sized paper (8.5" x 11") and three-ring binders, you won't need a punch with adjustable heads. However, if you anticipate needing different hole patterns (i.e. two holes for filing purposes), a punch with adjustable heads is what you should get. Also, if you're investing in an electric or heavy-duty device, you'll want to make sure the heads are replaceable. Otherwise, if they become dull, you'll need to spend money on an entirely new punch.

5.) What brand do you prefer? Finally, you should consider what brands you feel comfortable with. One of the best manufacturers of three-hole punches is Swingline, a company that's mainly known for their high-quality staplers. Swingline makes punches that are perfect for a variety of needs. Chances are they have one you'll love whether you want one that can be stored in a three-ring binder or a heavy-duty electric device.
