What Is A Medical Specimen Delivery
The needs within courier companies for diversification has led to many couriers offering
services that you might not have encountered before in your shipping experience. A perfect example of this is if your PA freight service was to suddenly offer medical specimen delivery, as it is safe to say that at least a portion of that company's clients are not going to know exactly what this includes. The reason that more and more courier companies are venturing into this area is because it is a profitable industry within their sphere, and allows them to ensure that their company is going to be bringing in income even if commercial shipping is down, as the medical industry is one which is going to continue to run in some fashion regardless of outside economic downturns.
A medical specimen is pretty much anything at all that has its origin in the human body. The word "specimen" typically indicates that it is something that has either been drawn for testing purposes, or which is being transported for further study of some kind. This includes things like blood drawn for blood tests, probably the most common medical specimen, but also all other bodily fluids and tissue samples which are required for a variety of medical testing procedures.
The medical industry relies upon dedicated couriers transporting these kinds of materials because cost prohibits having all of the required testing equipment in all medical facilities. Sometimes a machine that only performs a single test can be worth millions of dollars, so it is actually much more cost effective to have the medical specimen taken to the machine rather than the other way around, especially when you consider how seldom certain tests come up.
There are certain requirements that a courier needs to meet before they are allowed to transport medical material. First of all, they need special equipment which will have to be certified before they are allowed to transport anything medical or biological in nature. That is because the material needs to be transported in units which are refrigerated, as if they are exposed to heat for any period of time they generally become useless for testing purposes. In addition, most medical material is classified as hazardous, which requires an entirely new set of certifications and trainings for those that are working on making those types of deliveries. Some couriers will also venture into emergency medical specimen delivery, which will also require dedicated emergency vehicles.
