What Ingredients To Avoid When Buying Organic Lipstick
The skin on your lips is highly absorptive, which means that it can ingest chemicals and ingredients quite well
. That is why when you put on lipstick that has toxic materials, you may feel your lips getting heavy or thick. This is because the lips have highly sensitive skin that reacts to certain chemicals and ingredients on your lipstick. So what are the ingredients on your lipstick that you need to avoid? How to make sure that your lips stay moisturized and free from toxins and other hazardous materials.
Understanding the ingredients that you need to avoid
There are at least seven ingredients that you must need to avoid when buying an organic lipstick. These are parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, butylated hydroxyanisole, onxybenzone, fragrance and lead. Unfortunately, the United States government does not require cosmetic companies to list of all the ingredients of their products on the label box. This means that as a consumer, you dont get to review the ingredients there.
There are many different kinds of paraben, and you have to make sure that none of them are existent in the lipstick you are going to use. Words like methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben should be avoided because they are potential endocrine disruptors that may affect your hormones. In effect, such chemicals can cause breakouts and skin allergies.
Phthalates have also been associated with hormone disruptors, so it would be better too if you can stay away from it. In fact, some studies have even pointed out to phthalates as to cause reproductive birth defects. There are two main types of phthalates being used on cosmeticsbutyl benzyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate.
Then, you should also avoid ingredients that can release formaldehyde over time such as quaternium-15, dimethyl-dimethyl hydantion, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea and 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1, 3-diol. The preservative butylated hydroxyanisole must also be avoided because they have been proven to contain human carcinogens.
If you bought an
organic lipstick that promises protection from the harsh rays of the sun, you may also be wary with what it actually contains. Oxybenzone, which claims to have sun protection features, can also lead to allergies, cell damage and hormone disruption. Having fragrance in your lipsticks is also not a good indication that you have a non-toxic cosmetic on your hand. There are many things that fragrance ingredients are good for, but putting them on your lips is not one of them.
Of course, you might have heard that there are also certain cosmetic products that have lead on them. For whatever purpose these companies see putting lead fit, it still does not eliminate the fact that lead is one of the most harmful materials that can come into contact with your skin. Make sure that you are using a dermatologically tested and environment-friendly lipstick. Nothing is worth having that heavy or thick feeling on your lips, not even if your lipstick smells like strawberry and looks shiny enough to be seen in the dark.
