What Do Mice With Cancer Of The Skin Have To Do With Natural Skin Care?

, because rodents with cancer of the skin have lots to do with natural skin care.

A study was done where 4 moisturizers, each that contained Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLS), were applied to the skin of rodents five times each day for 17 weeks.

As a result of the research it was concluded that the use of these moisturizers to the skin of the mice caused a statistically significant increase in the rate of cancer of the skin in the mice who had the moisturisers applied, and particularly that this application of the moisturisers "increased the total number of histologically characterized tumors by 69%".

What surprised the scientists was that they were not actually studying the effects of using those moisturisers on skin cancer in mice, they were really researching something different. However they were so amazed at the results that they then ran exactly the same test using moisturizers that did not contain Sodium Laurel Sulphate, and discovered no statistical increase in the rate of cancer of the skin in the mice.

This is frightening stuff. Sodium Laurel Sulphate is found in a wide range of our personal care products such as soaps and shampoos as well as many moisturisers.

The possible health threats of SLS have been recognized for a while. Way back in 1983 the Journal of the American College of Toxicology documented a study on the effects of Sodium Laurel Sulphate on rabbits, and noted irritation to the eyes, severe skin irritation and at a concentration of 15% around 20% of rabbits subjected to Sodium Laurel Sulphate died.

You'd expect therefore that none of our personal care products like moisturizers would include Sodium Laurel Sulphate. The unfortunate fact is that they do, together with many other potentially dangerous chemical ingredients.

Equally sad is that we now have extremely effective natural moisturisers available such as avocado oil and macadamia oil which are highly effective at moisturizing skin and that are entirely safe. However the big name anti aging companies avoid using them since they're more costly.

Actually so many potentially hazardous chemical ingredients are now found in such a wide range of our personal products such as soaps and shampoos, cosmetics and skin care products such as moisturisers that you have entire organisations set up to combat this.

There's a powerful move taking place amongst customers who are now turning away from well known products containing these chemical ingredients towards much less hazardous, and in some cases more successful natural products that don't contain potentially harmful chemical ingredients.

And of course where you can find shoppers voting with their feet you will find businesses catering for this need by producing excellent natural skin care products that do not contain such chemical components as Sodium Laurel Sulphate.
