. When you're in a relationship, it can be fun to send an anonymous card to your partner, but you will also be expected to provide a Valentine's Day gift. Women are easy - think chocolates, flowers, shoes or perfume. A man is somewhat harder to buy for, as is proven once a year at Christmas. So what can you buy for your man this Valentine's Day which says "I love you" rather than "you need new underwear"?

The best way to find an appropriate present for someone is to consider their hobbies and interests. If they are a keen reader with a favourite author then you could buy them their latest novel. If they enjoy movies then a DVD player or television could prove to be a good present. Women hate getting kitchen equipment as gifts, but men love receiving tools. You might not want to encourage a DIY dummy to start making adaptations to your home but if he is already handy around the place then growing his arsenal of tools can only make his work more frequent and effective.

Men probably won't respond well to chocolate or flowers, these are girly gifts, but many men will appreciate a gift of aftershave, especially if it is selected by a loved one. They might have an old bottle of old spice kicking around somewhere in the medicine cabinet, but why not treat your man to a boutique perfume which is unique and charismatic?

Men have been shaving for long before the new multi-bladed razors became available. In the past shells were used to trim a man's facial fuzz, which worked but did mean small cuts on the face and neck were somewhat unavoidable. The risk of diseases and infections meant that aftershave was used after shaving, in order to clean wounds, close pores and reduce the risk of developing a nasty infection. The alcohol in the aftershave acted as an antiseptic before shaving techniques evolved.

These days there are specifically-targeted men's moisturisers and exfoliating products, but many men still don't feel comfortable shelling out on cosmetics. Buying a scent for a man saves him the trouble or embarrassment of choosing one himself, and means he has a good reason to stop wearing the old spice he got from his mum for Christmas.
