Doctors recommend you shed no more than one to two pounds per week during your weight loss program. Losing more than two pounds weekly can lead to long-term, negative medical consequences such as lost muscle, dehydration, and cardiac abnormalities. It may sound like losing one or two pounds each week is a slow go, but the opposite is true. Losing larger amounts of weight increases your chances of gaining the pounds back when you're through with the diet. Why reach your ideal weight only to gain it back? Slow as you go, when losing weight, is the best route.

The ideal way to begin your diet is not by cutting out fatty foods or restricting yourself to eating lettuce leaves. Start with lifestyle changes. Make a commitment to yourself to change not only your eating habits, but exercise and activity routines, as well. Throw out the junk. See a nutritionist if you're not sure how to purchase and prepare healthy meals. Exercise at least three times weekly. Drink plenty of water (doctors recommend eight glasses daily) and get lots of sleep. Did you know that getting too little sleep affects your stress hormones? When your body is stressed, you tend to feel hungry. Hence many late night snacks!

When you are ready to begin your weight loss journey, remember that it is a process, not an event. Once you've reached your target weight, continue with the methods that got you there. Follow your doctor's instructions and see her for regular check ups, especially if you are losing a large amount of weight or are considered to be morbidly obese.
