Weddings; A Time For Festivities And Celebration

Are the days of black tuxes, white Cinderella dress

, sit down formal dinners and beautiful receptions gone? People are certainly pushing the boundaries of social norms. I was told about two different weddings this weekend that really made me stop and wonder what has happened to protocol on the wedding front.

The first, and least offensive to me, was the wedding of my daughter's friend. She loves festivities; fairs, carnivals, farmers markets and amusement parks. They decided for their reception they would have a carnival; complete with a balloon person, popcorn, cotton candy, an inflatable slide and train rides. They found their balloon person on Craig's List, an internet site where you can purchase or rent almost anything. He was a local balloon distributor that brought a festive ambiance to the party. Balloons pretty say festivities all by themselves, cheap and easy. Add to the mix cotton candy and popcorn and you have a recipe for fun.

The guest stayed all afternoon and played with the bride and groom. Traditional? Nope, but a fun celebration of the nuptials.

The second wedding I heard about yesterday was a bit more disturbing to me. It took place on Halloween, everyone came in costume. Elvis performed the service while the bride and groom along with the guest read from an ancient pagan marriage script. The guest chanted and read their various written parts at appropriate times. The bride was a witch complete with a long nose while the groom sported a hairy, fanged get-up. Call me old fashion, but this seems sort of a mockery to the sacredness of marital vows. I thought marriage was a religious ceremony. To each his own, I guess.

While celebrations should reflect the personality and uniqueness of each couple, I am happy to say that our daughter is opting for a more traditional event. I guess we trade quirkiness and uniqueness for tradition, beauty and decorum. It will be an occasion of joy and celebration even if Elvis doesn't perform the rites. Maybe we should hire a balloon artist.
