Wedding Table Plans - Sorting The Rules From The Myths

When it comes to creating wedding table plans there are a lot of rules

. There are a lot of myths too. The funny thing is that most of the rules are actually myths. This means that if you're just starting to think about wedding table plans it's a good idea to put the pen and paper away for a minute, and to think outside the wedding cake box.

Because often people begin creating wedding table plans by sticking to the rules, doggedly following in footsteps that have become so worn and so deep that's it's quite possible to end up completely stuck in them and unable to move forwards.

So let's have a think about some of the main rules people tend to assume have to be followed, for whatever reason imaginable, and then understand why they are in fact little more than myths, which can be disregarded as you see fit.

The first rule is often assumed to be that wedding table plans begin with the Top Table. The Bride and Groom are positioned in the middle, with important members of the wedding party along each side. Although Top Tables worked perfectly well in the past, the trouble today is that more and more of us are finding that our families are a little more complex than they may have been in the past.

The Groom's parents may once have sat together at the Top Table, but today the Groom's mother, who divorced the Groom's father, is now with her new husband and step-son whilst the Groom's father and his boyfriend are happily sitting together getting odd looks from the more conservative members of the group.

It can sometimes seem as though the Top Table needs to be about half a mile long, leaving only poor old Great Aunt Edith and her next door neighbour sitting all alone on one rather small, bleak little table in the middle of the room gazing up at the gargantuan monstrosity that is the Top Table.

If you're faced with this problem then take comfort in the fact that having to have a Top Table at all is not a rule, but a myth. Do without it, and have the Bride and Groom on their own little romantic table, whilst everyone else is on little tables all around them.

Another popular 'rule' is that tables should be numbered when creating wedding table plans. This is nonsense, and in fact numbering tables creates a perceived hierarchy which can lead to a little ill feeling. Naming tables instead is a great idea, and gives your event a much more personal touch.

Finally there's the rule that says that wedding table plans should be sketched out, coloured in, drawn beautifully, redrafted and basically created by hand. Whether you're technically minded or not, we live in the 21st century, and computers provide a wealth of easy to use tools and solutions which can cut the time taken to create wedding table plans so drastically that you may even find you have enough free time to enjoy yourself.
