Wedding Speeches for the Father

Fathers play a huge role in their children's lives

. From teaching them to throw that very first baseball to being a shoulder to cry on during their toughest times, dads are the rocks we all lean on for support. So it is no wonder that fathers often have to give speeches at their children's weddings. Whether you are the father of the bride or of the groom, your special role in their life has earned you this speech. See it as the unique honor it is, and you will do well.

Wedding speeches for the father can be one of the hardest things you're ever asked to do, regardless of how close you are with your child. You want to give the perfect speech, say the perfect words, but at the same time you have to remember to thank all the people involved. You have to be funny without insulting the bride or groom. You have make the new couple's wedding day special while speaking from your own heart.

This is no small task. One of the best ways to get through it is to find a way to relax. There are many tricks and techniques you can employ to get relaxed in front of a crowd and overcome your nerves.

The most obvious technique is to simply breathe. If you are tense or anxious, you could start taking short, shallow breaths without even noticing it. Stop for a moment and take a couple long, deep breaths. It will help your body relax. And try to avoid falling back into the trap of taking those short anxious breaths. The speech will get easier the longer you talk for, so start off on the right foot with a nice deep breath.

Preparation is a step you take long before delivering the speech. If you have prepared well, there's nothing to worry about. If you have written a speech you think is great and have practiced, you will feel confident and relaxed when delivering it.

Music is also a great way to relax. You obviously can't listen to during the speech, but you may be able to listen to it right before. Choose songs you like and that calm you down. Let them play in your head if that's the only place you can play them.

Music often prompts us to think of certain images. Imagery is an important relaxation technique in itself though. What images you see in your surroundings and in your mind and relax you or tense you up. Choose music that conjures calming images. And if there is anything in the wedding hall itself that is a calming image for you, try focusing on that at the start of the speech. Once you are in the rhythm, you may find you no longer need to concentrate on that calming image anymore.

Muscles tense? Don't worry. That could actually be a good thing. Progressive muscle relaxation advocates tensing up small groups of muscles and then relaxing them. It's a great stress reliever that you can do right from your seat.

Most importantly, do your best. You want to give back to the child who has already given you so much joy. If you can find a way to relax and if you speak from your heart, you can't go wrong.
