Fans are powered devices that create a flow of air

. This can be useful for a number of applications including climate control, ventilation, dust extraction and motor cooling.

How Fans Work

Fans have a rotating arrangement of blades that move in a propeller motion. These blades are angled to trap air and because the fan is static the air is moved forward rather than the device. Most fans are powered by an electric motor and some are even designed to work off a USB port on a computer. Fan blades are safely contained in a housing or case. This casing helps to direct airflow and will also prevent objects from touching the fan blades as they are in motion.

Fans are used in a number of applications in the business world. This can range from the basic electric table fan which is used to improve cooling in office environments to large scale fume extraction units used in the chemical industry.

Mechanical Fans

These fans are the most common type available and are manufactured in a wide range of designs. You can find mechanical fans in a number of business applications from air conditioning systems through to computer cooling. Mechanical fans are also used in motor cars, hair dryers and heating units. These fans can be grouped into three main types:

* Axial Fans Axial flow fans have blades are specially angled to force air to move parallel to the main shaft. This means the air flows directly along the axis of the device. This type of fan is used in standard desk top cooling fans and also computer cooling fans.

* Centrifugal Fans centrifugal fans have a moving component that rotates. This means air can be directed out of an opening at greater pressure. This produces a much faster airflow which is useful for devices such as blowdryers, climate control and leaf blowers. Centrifugal fans are typically a lot noisier than axial fans.

* Crossflow Fans these are also known as tangential or tubular fans. They are commonly used in the HVAC industry as they are efficient at producing high pressure. These fans are longer than their diameter and this causes three distinct air flow systems, the through flow region, eccentric vortex and paddling region. Crossflow fans draw air inward and then move the air outward in a radial direction. This is allows the fan not just to create air flow but also to dissipated gases as well.

Bladeless Fans

Bladeless fans do actually have blades but these are hidden away in the lower compartments. The main body of the fan disperses the cooled air through a ring structure which contains no blades, which gives these devices their name. These can be very efficient ways of cooling and improving air flow in confined spaces.
