Wedding Invitations for Today's Bride and Groom

Today's bridal couple has more choices than ever to make about what type of wedding invitation to send. From engraved formal invitations on heavy ivory paper sent in double envelopes to print-them-yourself assortments, the selections available seem never-ending.

Before choosing an invitation a bride should decide the other details of her wedding and then let the invitation reflect the theme and style. The invitation is the first clue the guests receive about the wedding and it sets the stage.

While the invitation itself may be modern, the rules of etiquette for addressing the envelope still apply. Invitations should be mailed one to three months before a wedding. With a destination wedding, use the maximum time.

Traditional Wedding Invitations

If the wedding is in a church or chapel at 6 o'clock or noon, the two most formal times, the invitation should correspond with a more formal look. A classic invitation can be flat or a fold-over, and either square or rectangular. Good ways to dress it up for today include an embossed or raised border around the card.

A classic motif or monogram of the couple's or bride's initials provide a nice touch. While traditionally a fold-over had the invitation printed on the front, a more modern treatment is to have the bride and groom's first names on the front and the information inside.

Any enclosures go on top of the invitation itself, but try not to use too many with a formal treatment. Double envelopes are a classic touch, but single envelopes can be used for a formal wedding.

Contemporary Wedding Invitations

Other times of day and evening, such as an afternoon wedding or a destination wedding, leave room for more relaxed details such as color, artwork and pictures. One of the most popular new styles is the pocket invitation which can include the enclosures such as the reception card, reply card and reply envelope.

With the popularity of destination weddings, each piece of the suite can have starfish, shell or other motif that speaks of where the wedding will take place. A less traditional or modern invitation would not use a double envelope. There are many choices of pocket invitations that can be printed on a home printer rather than through a professional, a good way to save when looking to reduce costs.

Wedding Etiquette Rules

Hand addressed envelopes are best and calligraphy adds a beautiful touch. If the real thing is out of reach, computer calligraphy is acceptable. Never use printed labels on wedding invitations. Rules of etiquette dictate that the full name without initials should be used on the envelope or the outer envelope if double envelopes are used. Never abbreviate on a wedding invitation and be sure to spell out middle names whenever they are available.

Guidelines for Bride and Groom

A wedding invitation is addressed to a married couple using the husband's full name, for example Mr. and Mrs. John Marvin Smith. The names of unmarried couples go on two separate lines, usually the name acquainted with the couple first, but the woman's name can be first.

Children over 18 should receive their own invitation. Younger children can be listed on the inner envelope, or if there is not one, on the outer envelope. Spell out words like street or avenue and the name of the state.

Receiving a beautifully chosen and addressed invitation ushers in a lovely wedding experience and sets the right tone for the upcoming nuptials.
