Wedding Invitation Durability: Do Yours Pass The Test?
Just the other day I was anticipating an invitation
. Not just any stationery but an invitation to what promised to be the wedding of the year.
Finally it came. I looked with glee in the letterbox and spied what could only be assumed as an invitation to something special. I held the envelope in my hands, carefully eased the glue away, gently grasped the inside and began to pull it out.
I was hoping for something awe-inspiring, I was hoping for something exciting, I was hoping for something grand.
But instead I got something that was quite frankly an utter mess.
The wedding invitation was slightly soggy from the damp weather and the glue began to come off. Before my eyes, the invitation fell apart. Worse than that, the ink began to run which made it very embarrassing when I had to ring the bride and ask for the details again. What a waste of hard-earned money those invitations were!
In this age where DIY websites abound, where technology allows the average person to create things previously unimaginable, it is easy to assume that anyone can create the perfect wedding invitation. And whilst this is true the average person may design the perfect wedding stationery, it is a shame that the basics often get overlooked.
Wedding invitations must primarily be durable. They serve a specific purpose in alerting your guests to all the details of your wedding, so if they are unable to be read or understood, they fail in their task.
This is why it is extremely important to make sure that your wedding invitation is durable and will withstand some battering.
Think of what could possibly happen to your invitation: could it be rough-handled in the post? Could it get wet or damp in the postbox? Could the adhesive not be strong enough? Could the ink smudge or run?
From this list, you can begin to work out what you may need. Obviously top of the list is the cardstock. Dont just settle for cheap card that is thinner. Wedding invitations are meant to be on heavier stock to show the importance of the occasion. The card will be less likely to be bent or ruined in any way and will hold up better if the card encounters any dampness.
Secondly, check your printer. Many inkjet printers wont stand up to the test under wet conditions and likewise, if a person with a heated hand touches it, it may just smudge all the important details. Some printers are also not detailed enough in colour or quality and what results is an inferior product.
And lastly, ensure that your adhesive will stay put! Many scrapbooking double sided tapes arent designed for the use on cards where handling occurs, they are designed for scrapbook pages where the finished product is protected, so be wary of this before you use it.
Likewise, some glue adhesives do not create a strong enough bond and may begin to peel away from the backing.
Whatever products you do decide on, it is always worth creating a mock up and then subjecting it to numerous durability tests to ensure that your invitations arrive perfectly and your guests get excited about the event youre trying to create.
