Wedding Dresses Of The Past

Weddings of the past were mostly more about the show than the union of two people

. During the middle ages, marriage was seldom about the coming together of two people in love with each other. Most marriages were arranged by families in order to manipulate wealth, power, and even politics. In those years, marriage became a showcase of vibrant celebrations wherein families could out shine each other. It was more of a lavish show of pride and wealth. It was crucial that the dresses worn during these events were grand and exquisite. These women wore beautiful clothes not to show off themselves but more because they had to represent the family through what they wore. Brides of the middle ages were often clothed in dresses adorned with real jewels and stones. These dresses became so heavy that jewelry had to be sown on to the fabric in most staples. Dress colors were usually bold and bright. Violet, blue and red were the favorites and all these were highlighted by gold and more gold if possible. Furs were also added to the dresses of that time. Silk was often used and skirts were big and imposing.

Dress makers were true craftsmen in their own league. Many brides choose to wear their dresses in such a way that their social status would be apparent by the looks of the dress they wore. The materials that comprise the makings of these wedding dresses cost so much that it became incredibly crazy to have these dresses tailored in the later years. Wealth and showmanship had to be diverted and highlighted in other ways apart from the wedding dress. Poor women who get married on the other hand do not have the luxury of wearing a dress so elaborate and jeweled. Most ordinary folks tend to wear a simple dress made for them. Sometimes even their best Sunday dress will do for their wedding.

Tailoring dresses were big in the olden days and dress making was a common form of living for people in small towns. Now however, ready-made dresses are more accessible and even come in various sizes. You can simply choose a style and a size and the dress is already available for you to wear. Although personally made dresses still exist, these tend to cost more than the ones in the dress shops. Made to order dresses require a more detailed making of a dress for a specific customer.

Although most traditions have faded through the years, the middle ages still have great influences in the wedding dresses of today. A few mainstays are still practiced in todays wedding dresses to give that touch of the traditional. Styles like long trains and long veils showcase a trend from the Victorian era and the bulky skirts and corsets. No matter how long, these specific patterns have survived across the years and are used up to the present.
