. Today the decorations come in a variety of sizes, shapes and materials to reflect the tastes, styles and hobbies of the marrying couple.
The strange thing about these ornaments is that they can not provoke discussions among the guests about the couple but they can also show that what was once forbidden is now accepted.
If the wedding reception is more formal and even more traditional, the couple may well choose a topper to match the tone of the service and the reception. However, if the wedding is more of an informal affair, like a destination wedding on a beach, then a topper may include bare foot figures in wedding attire or a more casually dressed pair under palm trees. For people who are passionate about their hobbies, there is one for golf players and several different types of toppers for bikers. Wedding figurines show the couples in a variety of poses from the honeymooners lounging on the sand to a husband impatiently checking his watch with a golf bag slung over his shoulder. The funniest topper I have come across is one featuring a pair of hogs in black leather riding a Harley Davidson.
The growing ethnic diversity in America has pushed the demand for something which is truly symbolic and contemporary. There are not only African American figures available but also Hispanic toppers, Chinese, South Asian (with the right color of wedding sari) as well as biracial couples.
There are still only a few wedding product sites that have a broad selection in gay and lesbian wedding figures. By typing the search terms into Google, I came across a web site which had every conceivable gay wedding cake adornment possible from the extremely casual to the very formal.
These decorations are usually quite reasonable in price but can get quite expensive. Some couples like save toppers as keepsakes. The loveliest pair of toppers that I saw did not show a couple but two peacocks molded in two drinking pewter goblets decorated with blue Austrian crystals. I am sure these would be treasured for years to come.
