They called him sweetness. He was a hard runner, but he also moved with style and grace. For a little guy Walter Payton had both style and grace. He was both fast and strong when he ran with the football. His elusiveness was his trademark. The team he played for in the NFL was the Chicago Bears. Walter played for year with the Chicago Bears during a period that they were not a good football team.

Walter Payton was born on July 25, 1954, in Columbia, Mississippi. Payton was born with two other siblings. His parents were Edward Charles Payton and Alyne Payton. Payton was equally admired for his off-the-field personality as well as for his football skills. When he was a college running back at Jackson State, Payton began to attract national attention. He made the starting lineup in 1971, which was his freshman year. He was selected as an All American while in college. He was also named Black College Player of the Year in 1973 and 1974. In his four years at Jackson State, he rushed for more than 3,500 yards and scored more than 450 points. He was an extremely versatile and talented player and that was quickly recognized by his teammates, coaches and fans.

Walter was voted to the NFL Pro Bowl nine times during his NFL career. He has held so many league records that it is difficult to keep up with. He has held the following records: carries, rushing yards in a game, most career rushing yards, touchdowns and many other categories. Things did not start off too good for Payton. He did not get off to a really good start in his football career. In his very first NFL game he was held to zero yards rushing on eight carries, which was a very poor performance overall. Check out his jaw dropping career statistics for Walter Payton: 125 TDs, 110 Rushing TDs, 16,726 yards rushing, 492 receptions for 4,538 yards; 21,803 combined net yards. Wow! Most players would kill for these numbers.

Walter Payton always showed an interest in helping other people. His passion was working with the deaf. When he was 45 years old he died with a rare liver disease. The disease was called PSC or primary schlerosing cholangitis. He developed cancer in his bile ducts as a result of the condition. You will not get much of a dispute from people if you call him the greatest football player ever.
