. As the nearest entrance to the area of Grippland Lakes and forests it a warm and small town feeling country town ready to share its hospitality.

Being so close to the beautiful and rugged wilderness this town is a great place to stay and venture out from each day. Settled by Europeans in the nineteenth century it began as a place for cattle. Yet once gold was discovered the attention shifted rapidly to finding the wealth in the metal. This brought many people to the area including a lot of immigrants to the Australia.

Once the gold rush was ending the individuals that had helped build it decided to stay and watch it prosper. Many immigrants brought their expertise and culture to their new home and the Chinese had brought the integral way of farming. Soon there were hops, wheat, and oats being grown. This brought the dairy farmers to relocate here and several new businesses began.

This attention to growing and feeding off the land made a relaxed and down to earth feeling about this place and that has permeated the town. A respite here means long walks along the river, good hearty food, and a chance to be a local. Sitting on the banks of the Mitchell River, this town has the flow of the river to watch as you stroll along. Not far away is Lake King which also awaits your arrival.

With so much landscape to cover you may have a hard time deciding what to do. The lake affords fishing, swimming, or a simple picnic by the shore. The forests beyond allow for lovely hikes on miles of trails. Or stay in town traversing the historical Main Street and enjoying a stop in at St. Marys Catholic Church. The murals that cover the roof and walls are amazing and you can spend hours enjoying their beauty. Or step back into time at the Hillmay House where it is set with antiques from a bygone era.

The town is awash with beautiful flowers and plants. They use these abundantly throughout the local parks and down the middle of Main Street. This gives a glorious visual for you to enjoy. Archibald McLeod was from Scotland and the thought is that he named this town after where he was born. But there is a chance that the name came from his exclamation of, bairns, when he stepped off the train. The word bairn in Scotland means children and there must have been a lot that day he arrived.

How the town was named takes nothing from the deep roots of the aboriginal tribe of Brabralongcha which first inhabited this land. Their history is alive and well at the Krowathunkoolong Keeping Place which is a center for their history, culture, art, and crafts that you can enjoy and buy.

Being in Bairnsdale means a down home country feel that leads to the stupendous attraction of Grippsland forests, lakes and other surrounding nature. Loving nature and wanting to escape to it is perfectly paired with enjoying the delicious feeling of being home that this town allows. So stay here and wander there and find the best of both worlds.
