Turtle to Turbo Speed: Doctor Versus Coach – Who Carries More Weight?
Turtle to Turbo Speed: Doctor Versus Coach Who Carries More Weight
?
Injury, injury and more injury that's last month's summary of marathon training. I now have had injuries from head to toe ankle, foot, neck, back, hip and now knee. Thought I had handled those injuries pretty well, until my coach royally chewed me out for listening to my doctor about when I should return to training. Took a few days to sort that one out, but I now understand the logic.
I'd like to say that the first of the two injuries occurred while running. Would sound so much better if I said Istrained a muscle after pushing a little hard on a 10-mile run, but alas, that was not the case. Instead, I received aback injury while trying on clothes in a dressing room with my daughter. Stuck one leg in a pair of size 8 jeans and then tripped over the other pant leg. Down I went on my hip, and moaned in pain while my daughter busted a gut laughing hysterically. I've learned that injuries don't always immediately present themselves. By Monday, my body had twisted like a pretzel and I could barely walk.
Some doctors are incredibly sympathetic and when mine learned I'd sustained a run-threatening injury, he didn't take a lunch so he'd have enough time to treat me, despite a packed schedule that particular day. The doctor told me to take two days off and then resume running, as long as I had no pain. When I told my coach, he was not pleased. His following words were loud and clear, but a bit bewildering, "Your doctor is not a runner; I'm the runner and your coach. You are to tell me what the doctor advises and I will decide when you start running again."
Having not ever worked with a coach before this outburst floored me. Seemed the logical thing to do would be to listen to the doctor first. However, I learned that my coach was not advocating recklessness, but caution. His theory is that runners need to treat an injury much more carefully than a non-athlete, or else the athlete will be right back where he or she started. Instead of resuming the typical runs after a few days off, runners should ease back in to the normal schedule, giving the body plenty of time to heal.
To see the typical types of injuries to which runners are prone, check out my past blog Five Running Injuries to Avoid. In that piece, you'll find the following types of running injuries:
Shin Splints
Plantar Fasciitis
Achilles Tendonitis
Ankle Sprains
Blisters
Fortunately, I listened to my coach. Unfortunately, I wound up back at the doctor a week later due to yet another fall. Trying to save my knees while running 10 miles on the cement path, I hopped over to the trail that runs parallel to the other path. Didn't take long before I tripped over a stone and went down hard on my knee so much for saving my knees. Once again, I'd hit the right side of my body hard and the left side later showed the effects.
Should you run a marathon at 50 years of age? Well, many good things have come out of this journey that still has two months left to go but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone without enough money to fund your doctor's next vacation. If you're anything like me, you'll be using iTriage tofind a doctor near you, then keeping that doctor at your beck and call by sending him or her presents for all major holidays and birthdays.
Still runnin' down the dream, but sometimes limping
