Tummy Tuck Benefits For Baby-boomer Women

Women who have adhered to a healthy lifestyle throughout their lives find cosmetic

surgery an appealing option for keeping the body they have worked so hard for.

Women can spend their adult life committed to eating well, exercising and taking care of their skin but find that in their 50's and 60's the effects of aging start to negate their years of efforts. At this point, cosmetic procedures can be a refreshing option. As more and more women accept it as a normal part of maintaining beauty, any stigma felt about choosing this option diminishes.

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a popular procedure for women in this stage of life, as they become more concerned with the look of their abdomen and hips as compared to women in their 30's who tend to be more concerned with the appearance of their breasts.

It can be disheartening for a woman who has been slim her entire life to wake up and feel like she is carrying an addition 15 pounds around the middle. Even more so to discover that diet and exercise are just not having the effect they should.

A woman of any age can benefit from the increased self confidence gained through improving their physical appearance. But as women age, they see the benefits of improved self confidence to also benefit them socially and professionally. It can also be a great time in life for a woman to give herself a little extra attention. To do what will make her feel good about herself now that it is less likely she's focused on what's best for her family.

What do women need to consider when preparing for a tummy tuck? Be sure to work closely with both your general physician and plastic surgeon in regards to preparation for the procedure. The more your surgeon knows about your medical history the better equipped he or she will be to aid with your pre-operative preparation and to give you a realistic expectation of what to expect during the recovery phase which can last from several weeks to several months.

Keep in mind that even though a tummy tuck is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, it is still a surgery. In most cases, the belly button must be repositioned, resulting in a circular scar. Another scar will stretch from hip to hip, although a good surgeon will conceal this below the bikini line.

Drains are used to assist healing and are usually removed 1-3 weeks after the surgery. With proper planning and a realistic expectation of what to expect, a woman will only have better results in the long run.
