Tracking Down a decent Wedding Photographer

Tracking Down a decent Wedding Photographer

What day is bigger than your wedding? You would like it to go very well. So you need to plan. Many couples are surprised by how much energy is expended on their wedding day (no, I'm not talking about the wedding NIGHT!) and unless the wedding photographer does an outstanding job of capturing the important moments, it will be one big blur. So, it's understandable that the photographer is a key part of your wedding party- even though you don't even think of them included in the actualy wedding party. They are as important as the ring bearer, even the preacher or justice of the peace who's performing the ceremony!

In no important order of priority, you need to consider price, expertise, design and style and delivery issues.

Total price

Even simple weddings cost real money; the wedding photographer is no exception. If your prospective wedding photographer has a studio in the business section of your town, anticipate premium prices. Someone who works for them selves out of their own house generally has reduced overhead even when they have the same level of skill. As a result they can still offer first rate services at a lower fee. Some wedding planners recommend you allocate 15% of your overall wedding costs for the photographer; others lean more towards ten percent.

Expertise

Would you go into surgery with a doctor who has never held a scalpel? Then make certain your wedding photographer has used a camera, and well. Review their past wedding photographs; make note of any related education or work experience; get references and make the calls.

Approach

Wedding photography is a very targeted niche in the bigger field of photography. Photographers are artists, and no two are alike. Try to get an artist whose personal style and approach naturally and easily fits with yours as a couple. Don't sign a contract or make an advance payment until you are both totally happy with your choice. A few different styles/approaches to wedding photography to consider: Black & White, Candid, Emotional, Formal, Classic. If you are having a very unique wedding and reception (beach, horseback, skydiving) you will need to look for photographers who have done similar work and are competent at doing what it takes to get that shot!

Follow Up

Finally, make sure the contract includes timeline for seeing of the proofs and ultimate delivery of the pictures. Otherwise you might still be waiting for them when you celebrate your first anniversary!
