Tips on Choosing Who to Invite to Give Your Wedding Toast

One of the moments which will be highly anticipatedduring your wedding reception is the champagne toast

. You'll break out the bubbly, fill the champagne flutes, and sit back to listen to a speech all about you and your new spouse. Traditionally the best man has been the lucky guy' for the job, but these days it's becoming more and more popular to invite several special people to partake in the event. The maid-of-honor, the father-of-the-bride, and others are lifting their toasting glasses and expressing words to give cheers and celebrate newlyweds.

The speech can be very daunting for those who give it. All eyes are turned towards them and the pressure is on to deliver something clever, sweet and funny. They may be uncomfortable speaking in public or worried that they're going to jumble words, or worse - that they'll disappoint you. It's a big honor, one that requires forethought and preparation on their part, so be sure to take some things into consideration before you invite someone to take it on.

It's important to choose someone who knows both of you well. Having history with the two of you gives them the opportunity to share fun or cute stories, and your guests will love the sentimental aspect. Knowing you both also allows them to genuinely acknowledge how you are as a couple, how you complement one another, or how they've seen your love blossom during the course of your relationship. These are elements which create a beautiful toast, and if the person giving it doesn't know either you or your spouse very well they can come across as insincere.

You'll also want to consider someone that you trust not to get drunk before delivering the speech! (Have you ever seen The Wedding Singer?) The last thing you'll want is to have your husband's old fraternity brother swaying, slurring, and sharing memories of how the groom used to get totally plastered or how they kept tallies of their female conquests. If this happens to sound like your best man, don't be afraid to politely request that he keep it clean and refrain from the alcohol until after the toast.

It's a good idea to ask those who have a sense of humor similar to you and your spouse. If you're more reserved you may not appreciate your goofy uncle telling your guests how you ate poo when you were a baby. If you were class clowns in high school you probably won't enjoy a speech given by someone who merely recites a generic copy of a formal toast. And you should never instruct your toasters on what to say. Blunt or subtle, it doesn't matter, just don't do it!

When inviting someone to take on this honor, give them the option to say no. Most will be delighted at having been asked, but if they're extremely uncomfortable with it or have a lot of anxiety when speaking in public it's best to allow them to decline without guilt. Also, try to keep your toasters to a minimum. Two or three is a nice number, too many and your guests may become bored or antsy.

When the big occasion comes, enjoy it! Don't have outlandish expectations or have your hopes set on hearing the most eloquent toast in history. What matters is that they speak from the heart, and if you're asking the right people that's exactly what they'll do. Smile, raise your toasting flutes and say cheers to yourselves and your special day!
